We are the makers of possible: From ICU Nurse to Nurse Educator
For five years, Jason Kondilas felt pride in caring for patients at their bedside as an ICU nurse focusing on critical care.
When he got married and began having children, his career goals shifted a bit – resulting in him seeking a different kind of role. One where he could have a little more work-life balance, continue to utilize his comprehensive skills, and still retain a sense of compassion and satisfaction in serving others.
“When I joined the organization 13 years ago, I quickly understood how I could still serve others – just in a different way, as a nurse educator,” said Jason. “I have such a fulfilling role at BD, working with the nursing staff at various medical facilities and teaching them about best practices for using our vascular access products. And for the past nearly three years, I’ve managed a team of 10 nurses who are traveling full-time to help educate our customers. I really enjoy leading the team and helping them to keep learning and growing.”
Big Element to Success at BD
Jason, who serves as a Senior Clinical Manager for Clinical Sales in the Medication Delivery Solutions (MDS) business supporting the Capital and Mid-Atlantic Region area of the country, said a few keys to success at BD are being responsible and focused on the customer.
“Many times, I am 50% an educator and 50% a positive role model for our customers. The reason is that hospitals and the nursing profession overall are going through a massive amount of change. So when we launch a new solution, we have to help them embrace the change because they have so much coming at them already,” explained Jason. “Being responsible by focusing on the clinicians’ needs makes a big difference to them. It demonstrates you care about the relationship and how you can help them.”
Family Life and Advice to Others
Jason gets a lot of satisfaction from his work at BD, but also loves to spend time with his wife and two daughters. He enjoys tennis and exercising and grew up playing hockey. He jokes that with his girls on the cusp of becoming teenagers, he is often the family chauffeur.
When he considers what advice he would give someone considering joining BD, he calls out the sheer number of possibilities here. “Be open to new roles and growth overall. Truly a world of opportunity awaits you,” said Jason.
BD has a unique and diverse culture that’s inclusive, encourages empowerment and teamwork, as its associates and leaders keep looking ahead toward new challenges as opportunities grow.
