Ana Paes Soares
We are the creators of possible: Swindon-based Microbiology Tech is a lifelong learner
As a Senior Microbiology Technician at the BD Swindon site, Ana Paes Soares is responsible for ensuring that products are free from bacteria and other harmful microorganisms which could impact patient health and safety.
It’s a role that she truly loves, and she believes that her leader has had a large impact on her desire to keep learning and growing in this space. She joined BD in 2016 as a contractor working as a production operator. In 2018, she was offered a permanent full-time role in production and demonstrated she was interested and capable of contributing more.
“I looked for ways to grow further and explained I was interested in the Microbiology Technician role and how I could work toward it,” Ana said. “After a lot of training and shadowing others in the role, like my leader, I felt confident in applying for the role of Microbiology Technician and was made an offer. Ever since then, I’ve become fixated on the world of microorganisms.”
Embracing continuous learning
For Ana, diving into information and training materials for her role is natural. She considers herself a quick study and someone who does not get nervous about taking what she has learned and applying it. She desires to keep elevating her skillset and experiences to continue adding value to her role.
“A large part of my role is not just about testing batches of syringes once they come off the manufacturing line, but also training the operators about their behavior and how it could impact the clean room and ultimately, the product, which is rewarding,” said Ana. “Quality and patient safety are always number one on my mind.”
Car Detailing Business in Brazil
Ana began her career working in an office of a car detailing business in her home country of Brazil. It taught her the value of hard work, focusing on the end customer, and being detail-oriented, all attributes that serve her well in her BD role today.
“I’ve come such a long way from that first job. BD could not have been more supportive of allowing me to learn and become qualified to take on the role I have today. Don’t get me wrong, there is still space for me to learn. One challenge for me was learning all the processes and workflows and translating them into Portuguese first so I could comprehend them and then understanding what was needed. But that’s a small thing that I’ve overcome to succeed in a role that I enjoy and a company that I love.”
