For 17 years, Federico de las Barreras has proudly worked for BD.

During this time, he has not only been able to forge his path in the Finance function and expand his skills and expertise but has also gained tremendous experience working in other countries. He currently resides in Mexico as the Finance Director for Mexico and the Central Caribbean but through internal movement at the company, he has also worked in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Argentina, and Chile.

When he worked as Latin America Regional Business Controller, he was able to travel through many other Latin America countries and the US, gaining a lot of experience with different stakeholders along the way.

“With every move during my time with BD, I’ve been able to learn new skills, experience new teams and environments, and been exposed to new cultures and languages, and it’s also become apparent just how large and significant of an organization BD is to the world, which is pretty incredible,” explained Federico.

Finance Roots Go Deep

Born in Argentina, Federico knew very early on in his life that he wanted to have a career in finance. “I remember vividly being toward the end of high school and I knew I wanted to do something in finance because I loved so many aspects of it…financial planning and analysis, stocks, the stock market – it’s truly a passion of mine and still is,” said Federico. He graduated from the University of Buenos Aires with a bachelor’s degree in business administration.

Federico started in the Telecommunications industry as a business analyst and then moved on to a role as a junior financial analyst with a regional accounting firm. From there, he held roles of increasing responsibility until he came to BD in November 2006 as a Junior Financial Planning Analyst for BD Argentina – a role he held for two years. Here is a quick look at his BD career journey so far:

From 2008 to 2011, he held the role of Financial Planning Supervisor Argentina Hub (Argentina & Chile) and from Aug 2010 to Dec 2010, Federico served in a short-term assignment in Sao Paulo Brazil

From 2011 to 2016, Federico was the Latin America Business Controller for the BD Life Sciences Segment

From October 2016 to March 2017, he was asked to lead the establishment of the Center of Excellence for Financial Planning for LATAM, while living in Chile

From 2017 to 2021, he served as the Senior Manager of Finance for the South Cone in LATAM

And from 2021 to present, Federico has held the role of Director of Finance for LATAM’s Mexico Hub.

“I give all the credit to my wife who had submitted my resume to BD, for which I am very grateful,” said Federico. “Moving so many times to different countries and teams helped me gain exposure to BD senior leaders who led other regional aspects of the BD business, which was very helpful to keep building on my knowledge of the business overall.”

Leading Leaders and the BD Internal Mobility Team

When asked what the process of picking up and moving every handful of years is like, he quickly responds with a joke: “A lot of paperwork and documentation.” But in all seriousness, Federico draws energy from knowing he is moving to new roles where there is a need for his skills and experience, as well as knowing the company has confidence in what he will contribute once there.

“Moving within BD has been a really good experience. The Mobility team is good at helping and supporting, but one thing I would emphasize is to not take the decision to move to another country lightly, especially if you have a family. It’s critical to talk to your spouse or significant other to make sure you know what to expect. I’m just so grateful that BD and its leaders really encourage you to take advantage of different career opportunities that surface,” said Federico. “BD really is a company of career opportunity.”
