We are the makers of possible: From Tijuana to Eysins with a Furry Friend in Tow

As a young girl growing up in Tijuana, Mexico, Iridia Carreño knew she wanted to travel the world and experience other countries, cultures, and languages.

“But how can I make this possible?” She would ask herself. She discovered clarity in the realization that her journey did not need to be a tale of extraordinary luck, but rather one of dedication, hard work, perseverance, and authenticity.

Fast forward to 2024, where Iridia now resides in Switzerland, as a Director of Finance Operations for BD’s Pharmacy Systems business. A career move that she likely could not have designed any better, she says.

“I was born and raised in Mexico, and during my first trip abroad, I realized I wanted to live in Europe. Pursuing a master’s degree at a business school in Barcelona was my chance to explore another part of the world, and it was exhilarating! Shortly after returning to Mexico, I moved to San Diego, California. Later, I had the opportunity to work on a Business Integration project that took me back to live in Barcelona. Being open to change has led to new experiences, including my current role. I’m grateful for the opportunities at BD, for saying ‘yes’ to change and for the amazing colleagues I work with -- exceptional human beings that are intelligent and caring.”

On the Move

Iridia embarked on her professional journey by earning her bachelor’s degree from Universidad Autonoma de Baja California. She went into public accounting, where she developed her skills over an eight-year tenure. Subsequently, she joined Cardinal Health in 2009, which later spun off its CareFusion business.

Following the acquisition of CareFusion by BD in 2015, Iridia assumed the role of Senior Manager of General Accounting, a position she held until 2018. From 2018 to 2022, she took a different path as Associate Director, ISC Business Intelligence & Analytics. In August 2022, she received yet another promotion to Director, which prompted her relocation to Switzerland to support the WW Infusion Preparation and Delivery Platform and EU Medication Delivery Solutions. And in early 2024 she was promoted to her current role.

“Switzerland is a special place, where many BD expatriates work. The associates here are not only welcoming but also empathetic and have a genuine willingness to help. Their support has been pivotal in making this experience truly remarkable,” explained Iridia. “I am immensely grateful to the Global Mobility team, who expertly guided me through the relocation process—both for myself and my 4-year-old dog, Kaba. They remained by our side throughout the transition, even checking in on us a year later.”

Iridia acknowledges that moving from one country to another inevitably involves paperwork and documentation. However, she emphasizes that the process is thoughtfully managed. “The BD Mobility Team handles numerous aspects and services related to role changes and physical relocation,” she shared. “From the moment you accept the relocation offer until you’re settled in your new host country, their support provides comfort and reassurance.”

Aligning to the BD Purpose

Iridia reflects on her time with the company, emphasizing key factors for success at BD. She underscores the importance of being ethical, staying true to yourself, and having courage to embrace change – qualities that empower individuals to thrive. Speaking up, staying accountable, and doing what’s right are essential components of success.

As she thinks about her role and how it contributes to advancing the world of health^TM, Iridia acknowledges “in finance, we are not at the front lines with patients or customers. However, we gain a profound understanding of how financial insights can help drive impactful strategies. These strategies, in turn, positively affect healthcare and, ultimately, help people to live a healthy life. It’s a rewarding feeling to know you are part of that.”
