We are the manufacturers of possible: Family Affair at BD Swindon

JoJo Hu has had a rich history of job experiences.

She began her career in 2007 as a sales associate in the furniture hardware manufacturing industry. Then she became a sales broker for an electronics import/export company. After that, she served as a personal assistant to the CEO of a medical equipment manufacturer from 2011-2015.

JoJo then stopped to take on one of the best roles of her life: becoming a mother.

“In 2015, I stopped working to take a career break and become a full-time mother,” JoJo explains. “The differences in everyday life were initially challenging to adjust to, as I had just moved to the UK, not to mention the fact that I had limited knowledge of the social culture, working culture, and more in the UK. I had to start from scratch to gain brand new UK experience, both personally and professionally. I had a strong desire to connect with British society and I knew getting back into the workplace would be a great place to start.”

Husband Influences Next Career Move

JoJo explains that her husband is British and the family settled in the UK a little over six years ago. He also works for the BD Swindon Manufacturing Site, but in a different function. She says it was her husband’s own first-hand experience of the BD culture and career opportunities that gave her the confidence to apply for a role at the company.

“I applied for a Production Operator Flex Worker role through a temp agency, about five years ago. I’ve worked in six different areas of the site during that time – e.g. production cleanroom assembly, being the worldwide engineering business assistant, and then moving over to supply chain,” JoJo said.

Today, JoJo holds the title of Supply Chain Project Engineer, to which she was promoted in May 2023. “I couldn’t feel prouder or luckier that I started this next chapter with BD Swindon, which will always hold a special place in my heart.”

Experiencing BD Solutions First-Hand with Son’s Birth

JoJo emphasizes that it’s not just the nature of the work that she appreciates at BD, but also a very personal experience that left her grateful for how the company truly is focused on advancing the world of health^TM.

“When my son was born, he had severe jaundice and was hospitalized to receive light therapy. A blood sample was required daily to test his bilirubin levels. The first time we went to wait for this blood sample to be taken, I was shocked to see just how many BD-branded products there were in the nurse’s office. This gave me a personal, real-world insight into the importance of the quality of the solutions that we emphasize across BD. It was such a relief to know that my infant son was being treated using BD products,” said Jojo.

JoJo calls out that she feels a strong purpose and a great sense of belonging here at BD. At BD Swindon, there is a strong quality culture – known as “Inspire Quality”-- with many site events held throughout the year to reinforce the importance of quality. “My confidence in our products not only comes from my own experience being directly involved with the product assembly process and working with well-trained and caring associates, but also knowing that there are robust procedures and good teams in place to safeguard every process and its quality, every step of the way,” she said.
