Job Description
The Staff Engineer, GD&T & Product Variation Engineering serves as the technical authority for geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) across the organization. This role is responsible for developing and approving engineering drawings in accordance with ASME Y14.5 standards, establishing robust datum structures, and driving consistency in engineering drawing practices. The position partners closely with Design, Manufacturing, Metrology, and Quality teams to optimize product manufacturability, dimensional performance, and tolerance strategies. Additionally, the engineer leads design reviews, develops enterprise standards, and provides training and mentorship to advance GD&T expertise throughout the organization.
- Analysis of product tolerances, variation simulation, and risk evaluation
Develop and complete deterministic and statistical tolerance analyses for components, subassemblies, mechanisms, assemblies, and system-level product architectures.
Quantify the impact of dimensional, geometric, material, manufacturing, and assembly variation on product functionality, performance, reliability, quality, and user requirements.
Develop and maintain analytical and simulation-based variation models used to evaluate design robustness, manufacturability, assembly feasibility, and product risk throughout the product development lifecycle.
Establish tolerance allocation strategies that balance functional performance requirements, manufacturing capability, inspection capability, assembly capability, and product cost.
Perform sensitivity analyses to identify critical dimensions, geometric controls, assembly interfaces, and variation contributors that significantly impact product performance and quality.
Support Assembly Engineering through evaluation of assembly variation, tolerance stack-ups, manufacturing capability, process capability, and assembly-related risk assessments.
Collaborate with multi-functional teams to evaluate manufacturability, assembly feasibility, process capability, and product risk using variation-based analytical methods.
Apply statistical methods to assess capability, variation reduction opportunities, design margin, and robustness across expected manufacturing and operating conditions.
Develop data-driven recommendations that improve product performance, manufacturability, quality, assembly yield, and variation-related risk.
Support Design Verification, Risk Management, Process Development, Design Transfer, and Product Lifecycle Management activities through quantitative variation assessment and engineering analysis.
Partner with Design Engineering, Assembly Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Metrology, Quality Engineering, and supplier partners to drive robust product and process solutions through variation-informed decision making.
Communicate analysis results, technical recommendations, and dimensional risk assessments to project teams, functional leadership, and engineering management.
Technical Leadership
Lead highly sophisticated dimensional engineering initiatives spanning multiple engineering fields.
Serve as a recognized authority in GD&T, Product Tolerance Analysis (PTA), variation modeling, and dimensional risk management.
Establish and maintain dimensional engineering methodologies used across multiple projects, platforms, and business initiatives.
Mentor engineers in GD&T, Product Tolerance Analysis (PTA), variation modeling, statistical engineering methods, and robust design principles.
Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on dimensional quality, product robustness, engineering efficiency, and variation reduction.
Promote adoption of advanced engineering tools and methodologies that improve product development outcomes.
Influence multi-functional build decisions through data-driven engineering recommendations and technical leadership.
Present complex analytical findings and technical risk assessments to project teams, functional leadership, and senior engineering partners.
Minimum Requirement:
Degree level qualification; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
