Senior Engineer, Sustaining
Location: Vernon Hills, IL
Travel Requirement: Up to 20% domestic, based on project needs
Position Summary:
The Senior Engineer, Sustaining leads and executes both targeted and broad engineering assignments that deliver innovative, functional, and cost-effective solutions to support product development and commercialization. This role ensures products are designed for manufacturability and that scalable, robust processes are in place for production. Additionally, the engineer supports existing BD products and product families through lifecycle management, adherence to quality systems, design controls, and sound engineering practices.
Key Responsibilities:
- Drive product lifecycle management by resolving technical issues, implementing design enhancements, and managing product updates and process changes for cost savings.
- Lead process transfers and vertical integration efforts across internal BD sites and external suppliers, serving as the technical liaison.
- Ensure compliance with BD’s Quality System through rigorous verification of engineering work products.
- Apply engineering principles (DFMEA, PFMEA, DFM, materials science, process reliability) to meet product design and manufacturing requirements.
- Collaborate with R&D, Marketing, Quality, and Manufacturing to identify and implement product and process improvements.
- Conduct detailed design and process analysis; review and approve component and equipment specifications.
- Evaluate new manufacturing processes and technologies for integration into existing operations.
- Coordinate commercialization of new products and processes with global manufacturing sites.
- Develop and manage project plans, budgets, contingency strategies, and resource estimates.
- Provide technical leadership in sustaining engineering, cost reduction, and design transfer initiatives.
- Integrate complex subsystem designs into scalable manufacturing processes.
Required Qualifications:
- Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Mechanical, Chemical, or Biomechanical required). MS, preferred.
- Experience:
- Minimum 5 years in product and process engineering within the medical device or pharmaceutical industry.
- Proven experience in project management, design for manufacturing, and technical leadership.
- Experience with statistical analysis, technical documentation, and process validation.
- Familiarity with ISO standards, GMP, and regulatory compliance.
- Skills & Competencies:
- Strong leadership and cross-functional collaboration skills.
- Expertise in design controls, change management, and manufacturing coordination.
- Excellent verbal and written communication, decision-making, and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to adapt to shifting priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Self-starter with a hands-on, practical approach to engineering challenges.
- Process Excellence certification (Six Sigma, Lean Green/Black Belt) highly desired.
