Be part of something bigger at BD. Here, you’ll join a driven, agile engineering team working in a startup-like environment that has the backing and resources of a Fortune 500 company. In engineering, you could be involved in everything from operations, production and construction to information technology and maintenance environments, all while analyzing and developing solutions to further our engineering capabilities. You’ll use your talent and track record of solving complex problems to achieve one singular goal: advancing the world of health™. At BD, you can make a true difference of one.
Responsibilities
We are the people who give possibilities purpose
BD is one of the largest global medical technology companies in the world. Advancing the world of health™ is our Purpose, and it’s no small feat. It takes the imagination and passion of all of us—from design and engineering to the manufacturing and marketing of our billions of MedTech products per year—to look at the impossible and find transformative solutions that turn dreams into possibilities.
Job Description
About The Role
Help develop the next generation of cloud-based medical products supporting our growing infusion pump portfolio.
You will join a multi-functional engineering team building applications on our BD Cloud Platform. Depending on product needs, your work may include drug library software, pump management, or pump connectivity.
As a Senior Software Engineer, you will take technical ownership of complex features, guide design decisions, and help strengthen engineering practices across the team.
You will develop new capabilities, extend existing applications, and reuse existing components where appropriate. Your work will support healthcare professionals in hospitals and patients at home.
We welcome engineers with frontend, backend, or full-stack experience. You can bring a specialization while contributing across application layers and helping others develop broader technical skills. Our current ecosystem includes C#/.NET services, React/TypeScript applications, Docker, Kubernetes, and Helm. Prior expertise in every technology is not essential. We value disciplined problem-solving, sound technical judgment, and accountability for delivering software that works as specified.
Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and maintain complex features across new and existing cloud applications, including unit tests that demonstrate expected behavior and cover meaningful failure scenarios.
- Own complex user stories and related technical work from requirements clarification through implementation and development testing, supporting Quality Engineers through final verification and resolving identified defects.
- Turn ambiguous requirements into actionable engineering work by identifying assumptions, clarifying acceptance criteria, managing technical dependencies, and collaborating with Quality Engineers on verification approaches.
- Contribute across frontend, backend, and service integration work, coordinating with teammates and the specialized testing team responsible for automated verification.
- Lead design discussions and make well-reasoned technical decisions that account for correctness, maintainability, security, performance, and testability. Document significant decisions and their tradeoffs.
- Use GitHub Copilot and other approved AI-assisted development tools effectively. Critically evaluate generated solutions, remain accountable for their design and behavior, and coach teammates in responsible AI-assisted engineering.
- Provide thorough code reviews, mentor less-experienced engineers, and resolve complex defects through evidence-based investigation.
- Work with containerized applications and existing Kubernetes and Helm configurations in collaboration with platform teams.
- Follow our Quality Management System, development lifecycle, and documentation requirements, incorporating these obligations into technical planning and implementation.
- Communicate progress, technical risks, uncertainties, and blockers clearly. Proactively address issues and escalate decisions that require broader alignment.
Required Qualifications
- Substantial professional software development experience, with demonstrated ownership of complex features or application components through delivery.
- Strong working knowledge of at least one modern programming language, such as C#, Java, Go, or TypeScript, and demonstrated ability to become productive in unfamiliar languages and frameworks.
- Practical experience with Git, GitHub, and Dockercontainers, alongside an understanding of service-oriented and monolithic architectures and their tradeoffs.
- Ability to independently break down complex engineering problems, make assumptions explicit, evaluate alternatives, and demonstrate that solutions meet requirements.
- Strong understanding of unit testing, automated testing practices, code review, debugging, and maintainable software design.
- Ability to use AI-assisted engineering tools with sound judgment: provide clear context and constraints, assess generated code critically, and validate correctness, security, and maintainability.
- Demonstrated ownership of implementation and delivery, including proactive management of technical risks and dependencies without continuous direction.
- Experience providing constructive technical guidance, reviewing others’ work, and helping less-experienced engineers develop their skills.
- Clear communication and willingness to contribute beyond a preferred frontend or backend specialization.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience delivering applications using C#/.NET, React/TypeScript, or comparable backend and frontend technologies.
- Practical experience with Kubernetes, Helm, cloud application development, APIs, or distributed systems.
- Experience extending existing systems while introducing new capabilities, with attention to compatibility, reuse, and technical debt.
- Experience developing healthcare or other regulated software.
- Familiarity with requirements traceability, structured verification, or the V-model.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
Learning And Scope
Product-specific technologies, the V-model, and the system supporting our quality control efforts can be learned in the role. Senior engineers are expected to apply these practices independently as they become familiar with them and help teammates do the same.
Engineers will work with established delivery tooling. Ownership of CI/CD pipelines and deployment infrastructure is not required. This position does not include production support or on-call responsibilities.
